On Job Rotation

A fundamental principle of economics with which Adam Smith begins The Wealth of Nations is the division of labor. Some firms, however, have been pursuing a practice called job rotation, which assigns each worker not to a single and specific task but to a set of several tasks among which he or she rotates with some frequency. We examine the practice of job rotation as a serious alternative to sp...

John Field ‘ Migration and workforce aging ’ In

International migration is expanding rapidly, and the experience of aging is changing with it. The Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells describes our society as dominated by a ‘space of flows’ arising from the rapid interchange of information and ideas through new information systems; but the movement of people throughout what Castells calls ‘the space of places’ is an equally striking character...

Directed search and job rotation

We consider the impact of job rotation in a directed search model in which …rm sizes are endogenously determined and match quality is initially unknown. A large …rm bene…ts from the opportunity of rotating workers so as to partially overcome loss of mismatch. As a result, in the unique symmetric equilibrium, large …rms have higher labor productivity and lower separation rates. In contrast to th...

On the job rotation problem

The job rotation problem (JRP) is the following: Given an n × n matrix A over R ∪ {−∞} and k ≤ n, find a k × k principal submatrix of A whose optimal assignment problem value is maximum. No polynomial algorithm is known for solving this problem if k is an input variable. We analyse JRP and present polynomial solution methods for a number of special cases.

Effects of Co-Worker and Supervisor Support on Job Stress and Presenteeism in an Aging Workforce: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach.

We examined the effects of co-worker and supervisor support on job stress and presenteeism in an aging workforce. Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate data from the 2010 wave of the Health and Retirement Survey in the United States (n = 1649). The level of presenteeism was low and the level of job stress was moderate among aging US workers. SEM revealed that co-worker support and ...
